The best new movies at the theater this week just might be the old ones. Well, not too old, we’re talking two, maybe three weeks old, as this weekend sees further expansion for both Celine Song’s gem “Past Lives” and Wes Anderson’s latest winner “Asteroid City.” The new new stuff? That’s a bit less thrilling.

But, as we always hasten to remind our readers, there are always good movies to see, if you’re willing to dig a bit more. This week, most multiplexes will be expecting fans to turn out for Jennifer Lawrence’s raunchy R-rated comedy “No Hard Feelings,” the lone new wide release on the calendar.

If that offering isn’t tickling you (or your funny bone), discerning cinephiles would do well to seek out some serious counter-programming, like Alice Winocour’s “Revoir Paris,” starring Virignie Efira in her César-winning turn as a terrorist attract survivor, or Nancy Buirski’s enthralling New Hollywood documentary “Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy.”

Next week: Indy is back!

Each film is now available in a theater near you or in the comfort of your own home (or, in some cases, both, the convenience of it all). Browse your options below.
